This week, we delve into how Artificial Intelligence can assist with African language representation, and some of the challenges therein.

In August 2023, the African Library and Information Associations and Institutions (AfLIA) and Neil Butcher & Associates (NBA) co-published an Overview for African Librarians on the UNESCO OER Recommendation and Open Knowledge.
A William and Flora Hewlett Foundation grant to NBA funded the research and writing entailed in producing the Overview.

As the knowledge landscape rapidly evolves due to digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and open access initiatives, academic and research librarians must continuously enhance their skills to remain effective. To support this need, OER Africa and the African Library and Information Associations and Institutions have developed a Continuous Professional Development Framework for Academic and Research Librarians, designed to provide structured and ongoing professional learning opportunities.

The Publishing Cooperative Advisory Group of the Open Education Network recently announced its revisions to its Publishing Toolkit, expanding the content into two new openly licensed toolkits – the OER Publishing Project Toolkit and the OER Publishing Program Toolkit.

Following the adoption of the OER Recommendation in 2019, UNESCO initiated a programme to support governments and educational institutions in implementing it.
One aspect of this programme was the development of a series of five guidelines to inform implementation of each Action Area in the Recommendation.
